Our Mission
LawnsCal UK exists to give British gardeners, homeowners, and lawn care professionals accurate, free calculation tools so they can buy the right amount of product, waste less, and achieve better results — every time.
UK-Verified Rates
All sowing rates, coverage figures, and application recommendations are cross-checked against UK industry sources — BSPB, BASIS, RHS, and manufacturer data sheets.
Seasonally Updated
UK lawn care is highly seasonal. Our calculators and guides are reviewed each season to reflect current UK growing conditions, product availability, and best practice.
Always Free
All tools remain free, supported by advertising. We will never put our calculators behind a paywall or require registration.
Britain-Specific
Not adapted from US or European tools. UK product sizes (5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg bags), UK climate zones, and British growing seasons throughout.

We never use unverified social media posts, gardening forum opinions, or US/European rates as primary sources for our UK calculators. All calculator inputs are traceable to an official UK industry source.
How We Build Calculators
- Source the UK rate: Identify the standard UK sowing or application rate from BSPB, BASIS, or manufacturer data — typically a range (e.g. 35–50 g/m² for new lawn from seed)
- Select appropriate default: Choose a conservative mid-range rate that suits most UK garden conditions; note variables that affect the range
- Map to UK bag sizes: Calculate results in both kg and standard UK retail bag sizes (5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg for seed; 10 kg, 20 kg, 25 kg for fertiliser)
- Add wastage allowance: Where appropriate, add a small wastage buffer (typically 5–10%) to account for uneven spreading and edge coverage
- Test against real scenarios: Verify outputs against known real-world examples — e.g. a 50 m² lawn at 35 g/m² should produce a sensible bag count
- Document assumptions: Clearly state on each calculator page what rate is used and what conditions might require adjustment
Guide Content Standards
Seasonal Guides
Our seasonal lawn care guides (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and the UK Lawn Care Calendar reflect the UK growing season based on Met Office climate data and BSPB/RHS seasonal recommendations. We distinguish between the different climatic needs of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and English regions.
Regional Guides
Our regional guides (Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, London, North, South, Midlands) are written acknowledging the significant climate variation across the UK. We use Met Office regional data and BSPB regional recommendations where available. All regional guides state clearly that local conditions vary within each region.
Product Reviews and Best-Of Guides
Our “Best” guides (best grass seed, best lawn fertiliser, best scarifier, best robot mower, best lawn feed) are written independently. Products are assessed based on:
- Verified product specifications from manufacturer data sheets
- BSPB certification status for grass seed varieties
- Widely cited UK gardening sources including RHS recommendations
- Customer review consensus from major UK retailers
- Value for money based on current UK retail pricing
We do not accept payment for product placement or favourable review positions. If we ever introduce clearly labelled sponsored content in future, it will be visually distinct and explicitly marked “Sponsored.”
Corrections Policy
- Wrong sowing or application rate: Corrected within 24 hours — highest priority as this directly affects purchasing decisions
- Calculator formula error: Fixed as soon as confirmed — marked “under review” until corrected
- Outdated product availability or pricing: Updated within 72 hours of confirmation
- Seasonal guide inaccuracies: Corrected within 1 week
- Minor typographical errors: Corrected within 1 week
Report errors at admin@lawnscal.co.uk with the page URL, the wrong value, and the correct UK source (product label, BSPB rate table, etc.). We respond to all accuracy reports within 2 business days.
Editorial Independence
LawnsCal UK’s editorial content — calculator formulas, sowing rates, seasonal advice, and product recommendations — is completely independent from our advertising relationships.
- Google AdSense advertising has zero influence on which products we recommend or which sowing rates we use
- We do not accept payments from lawn care brands, seed suppliers, garden retailers, or fertiliser manufacturers for favourable coverage
- Product mentions in guides are based on independent assessment of publicly available data
- Calculator rate updates are driven solely by changes in UK industry standards — not commercial relationships
