The six grass species found in most UK lawn seed mixes — what each one contributes and which uses it is suited to.
Amenity cultivars are far finer than agricultural ryegrass. STRI-listed cultivars are the gold standard for UK family lawn mixes.
Found in virtually every UK lawn seed mix. Strong and slender creeping types differ — strong is tougher, slender is finer. The backbone of most mixed UK lawn seed.
Non-creeping — forms dense tufted sward with very fine texture. Primary species in fine ornamental UK lawn mixes. Cannot withstand regular foot traffic.
The ultimate fine-lawn species — used on golf putting greens and bowls greens. Extremely fine, close-cutting grass that requires consistent nutrition and mowing discipline.
Slow to establish but self-repairs via rhizomes — spreads laterally to fill bare patches without reseeding. Used on Premier League pitches for this self-healing ability.
Best drought tolerance of any UK lawn grass species. Slow vertical growth rate means very low mowing frequency — useful in low-maintenance or difficult-access areas.
Correct preparation and sowing technique is more important than product choice — even the best grass seed fails in a poorly prepared seedbed.
The two ideal UK sowing windows are April–May (spring — soil warming, reliable moisture, good light levels) and August–September (late summer/early autumn — soil still warm from summer, autumn rains beginning, 6+ weeks of active growth before winter). September is generally considered the single best month for UK grass seed sowing — warm soil, cooling air, increasing rainfall.
Avoid sowing in June–July (drought risk, scorching heat, soil too dry for reliable establishment) and November–March (soil too cold for germination — below 8°C standard seed stalls).
