When to apply each treatment for maximum effect — based on UK climate and growing seasons.
Provides the three key nutrients — nitrogen (green growth), phosphorus (root development) and potassium (disease resistance). A four-application programme uses different formulas for each season: high-nitrogen spring feed, balanced summer feed, autumn hardening feed, and optional winter iron treatment.
Iron sulphate (ferrous sulphate) or proprietary moss killers blacken and kill moss in the lawn within 2–3 weeks. Treating moss alone is not enough — the underlying causes (poor drainage, compaction, shade, low soil pH) must also be addressed or moss returns quickly. Raking out dead moss before overseeding is essential.
Selective lawn weedkillers (such as those containing MCPA, mecoprop-P or fluroxypyr) kill broadleaf weeds without harming grass when applied correctly. They work best during active growth in spring and early summer. Do not apply during drought, cold weather, or heavy rain. Several applications may be needed for persistent weeds like clover or yarrow.
Scarifying removes the layer of dead organic matter (thatch) that accumulates at the base of the grass stems. A thatch layer over 1–1.5cm thick reduces water penetration, harbours disease, and prevents fertiliser reaching the roots. Autumn scarifying (September–October) is preferred as the lawn has time to recover before winter. This is the most disruptive annual treatment but one of the most beneficial.
Hollow tine aeration removes small cores of compacted soil, creating channels for air, water and nutrients to reach grass roots. Particularly beneficial for heavily used or clay-soil lawns. Solid tine aeration (using a garden fork or roller spike) is a cheaper alternative that reduces compaction without removing cores. Autumn is the ideal time, combined with scarifying, overseeding and top dressing for maximum benefit.
Sowing new grass seed into an existing lawn thickens the sward, fills bare patches, and can introduce improved modern grass varieties. Most effective immediately after scarifying and aeration when the soil surface is disturbed, giving seed good soil contact. Autumn overseeding (September–October) benefits from warm soil and reduced weed competition. Keep the seeded area moist for 3–4 weeks until germination is established.
A thin layer (5–10mm) of a fine sand, loam and compost mix applied over the lawn surface after scarifying and aeration. Top dressing improves soil structure, fills minor surface irregularities, encourages earthworm activity, and improves drainage on clay soils or moisture retention on sandy soils. Use a straight-edged tool or lute to brush the dressing into aeration holes and work it between the grass plants rather than smothering the leaves.
Biological control using microscopic nematodes (Steinernema and Heterorhabditis species) to kill chafer grub and leatherjacket larvae that feed on grass roots underground. Apply in late summer to early autumn when larvae are young and close to the soil surface. Nematodes require moist, warm soil (above 12°C) and must be applied immediately after delivery. An effective, chemical-free alternative to pesticides for soil pest problems.
Robotic mowers operate continuously throughout the growing season, returning micro-clippings as a natural mulch fertiliser. Once the boundary wire is installed (usually a one-time professional installation cost of £150–£300), the mower runs automatically with minimal intervention. Entry-level robotic mowers suitable for up to 300m² cost £300–£600. The mulch clippings provide nutrition equivalent to one standard fertiliser application per season.
