How to Calculate Turf Rolls

A simple 4-step process to make sure you order exactly the right number of rolls.

1

Measure Your Lawn

Measure the length and width of your lawn area in metres. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and add them together. For circles, measure the radius (half the widest point).

2

Calculate the Area

Multiply length × width for rectangles. Use π × r² for circles. Use ½ × base × height for triangles. The result is your total area in m².

3

Add Wastage

Always add a minimum of 5% for cutting, shaping curved edges, and any damaged rolls. For complex shaped gardens with lots of curves, use 10%. Never round down when ordering.

4

Divide by Roll Size

For standard UK 1m² rolls: your area (+ wastage) = your roll count directly. For B&Q rolls (0.83m²), divide your area by 0.83. Always round up to a whole number of rolls.

How to Lay Turf in the UK

Key steps and tips for laying turf rolls successfully on a UK lawn.

Before You Lay

Proper preparation is the most important part of any turfing project. Turf laid on poor, uneven or compacted ground will fail within weeks regardless of quality.

  • Dig out the top layer to allow 100–150mm depth for topsoil
  • Remove all weeds, stones, and debris from the surface
  • Apply a pre-turfing fertiliser 4–7 days before laying
  • Rake to a fine, level tilth with no large lumps
  • Firm the surface with a roller or your feet before laying

Laying Pattern

Turf must be laid in a staggered, brickwork pattern — never with all joints lining up in a row. Start with the longest straight edge (a path or fence line) and work away from it.

  • Lay rolls end to end in straight rows, butting edges tightly together
  • Stagger each row so joints never align across neighbouring rows
  • Kneel on a board placed on laid turf — never on bare turf
  • Cut edges using a half-moon edger or sharp spade
  • Water heavily immediately after laying and twice daily for 2 weeks
📅 Best Time to Lay Turf in the UK

Turf can be laid in any month except when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. The ideal windows are September–November (soil still warm, less watering needed) and March–April (before summer heat arrives). Avoid July–August unless you can water twice daily.
⚡ Turf is Perishable — Lay Within 24 Hours

Fresh turf rolls are a living product and begin to deteriorate as soon as they are harvested. In summer, turf can die within 24 hours if left stacked. In cooler weather, you have up to 48 hours. Always prepare your ground fully before ordering so you can lay immediately on delivery.
🚫 First Cut Rule

Do not mow newly laid turf until you cannot pull a roll up from the ground — this means roots have knitted into the soil. This typically takes 2–3 weeks in summer and 4–6 weeks in autumn/winter. Set your mower to its highest setting for the first two cuts.

Turf Roll Calculator — FAQs

Answers to the most common UK questions about ordering and laying turf rolls.

For standard UK turf rolls (1.64m × 0.61m), each roll covers exactly 1 square metre. So if your lawn area is 50m², you need 50 rolls before adding wastage. Always add at least 5% for cuts and edge wastage — making it 53 rolls for a 50m² lawn. If you are using B&Q-sized turf (1.37m × 0.61m = 0.83m²), you need to divide your area by 0.83 and round up.
For a 50m² lawn using standard 1m² rolls, you need 50 rolls as a base figure. Adding the recommended 5% wastage allowance brings this to 53 rolls. For a curved or irregular 50m² lawn, increase wastage to 10% and order 55 rolls. If using B&Q rolls (0.83m²), divide 50 by 0.83 = 61 rolls, plus wastage.
For a 100m² lawn with standard 1m² rolls, you need 100 rolls before wastage. Adding 5% wastage gives you 105 rolls. For a 100m² garden with complex curves and borders, use 10% wastage and order 110 rolls. At an average UK price of £3.50 per roll, 105 rolls costs approximately £367.50 for the turf alone, before topsoil and laying costs.
The standard UK turf roll measures approximately 1.64m (length) × 0.61m (width) × 25mm (thickness), covering exactly 1 square metre of ground. This size is produced by Trebro and FireFly Turf Harvesters used by the majority of UK turf growers. Some suppliers vary very slightly — for example, 1.65m × 0.60m — but all result in 1m² coverage. Always confirm with your supplier before ordering.
When turf is laid around curved edges, flower bed borders, or awkward corners, rolls must be cut to shape. The cut-off pieces are too small to reuse elsewhere, so they are wasted. A standard straight rectangular lawn needs 5% wastage. A lawn with many curved edges, irregular shapes, or islands needs 10–15% extra. It is always better to have one extra roll left over than to run short and have to reorder.
In the UK, turf roll prices typically range from £2.50 to £6.50 per roll (per m²), depending on the turf grade and supplier. Budget turf from a local grower or garden centre starts around £2.50–£3.50/m². Premium sports-quality or cultivar turf (e.g. Rolawn Medallion) is £4.00–£6.50/m². Delivery costs are usually added on top and can be significant for small orders. Buying in larger quantities (100+ rolls) often reduces the per-roll price.
Yes. For a circular lawn, use the formula: Area = π × radius². Measure from the centre of the circle to the outer edge to get the radius. For example, a circle with a 4m radius has an area of 3.14159 × 4 × 4 = 50.3m², so you need 50 rolls plus 10% wastage (55 rolls) due to the curved edges generating more cutting waste than a rectangle. Our calculator above handles this automatically.
Freshly laid turf typically roots into the soil within 2–3 weeks in summer (April–August) and 4–6 weeks in autumn and winter. You can test rooting by trying to lift a corner of a roll — once it resists pulling, the roots have established. Consistent watering is the single most important factor in successful establishment; the turf must never be allowed to dry out in the first 2–3 weeks.
For a new lawn from scratch, you need a minimum of 100mm (10cm) of good quality topsoil beneath the turf. For very poor, compacted, or clay-heavy ground, increase this to 150mm. To calculate topsoil in tonnes, multiply your area (m²) by the depth (0.10m for 100mm) to get cubic metres, then multiply by 1.3–1.5 (topsoil density) to convert to tonnes. A dedicated topsoil calculator gives more precise figures.
Many UK turf suppliers have a minimum order, often 20–40m² (rolls). This is because the cost of cutting, loading and delivering a very small quantity is not economical. Some suppliers like local garden centres sell individual rolls with no minimum, but at a higher per-roll price. For online turf deliveries, always check the minimum order and delivery charge — a delivery surcharge for small orders can sometimes exceed the turf cost itself.
Lay your first row of turf rolls end to end along your longest straight edge. When starting the second row, begin with a half-roll (cut one roll in half with a sharp spade) so that the joints between rolls are staggered like brickwork. Continue alternating full and half starting pieces on every other row. This staggered pattern prevents a continuous joint line running across the lawn, which would look unsightly and create a weak point.
Budget UK turf (£2.50–£3.50/m²) is typically a meadow-grade mix containing ryegrass and coarse fescues grown with less specialist maintenance. It establishes well and is durable. Premium turf (£4.00–£6.50/m²) such as Rolawn Medallion uses certified cultivar seed mixes, is grown on purpose-built fields with consistent irrigation and fertilising, and produces a finer, more even sward with better colour and density. For a high-quality lawn, premium turf is worth the investment.
It is generally not recommended to turf directly over an existing lawn. The old grass and thatch will decompose beneath the new turf, creating an uneven surface and preventing good root-to-soil contact. The correct approach is to kill the existing lawn with a glyphosate weedkiller, rotovate and rake out all debris, level and firm the surface, and then apply fresh topsoil before laying new turf. This guarantees a level, healthy base for long-term results.
Yes — our calculator above includes a sq ft mode. When you select sq ft, it automatically converts your measurements to m² before calculating (dividing by 10.764), since UK turf rolls are sold by the square metre. This means you can measure your garden in feet and still get an accurate UK roll count. As a quick reference: 100 sq ft = 9.3m² = 10 standard rolls (with 5% wastage).
B&Q turf rolls measure 1.37m × 0.61m, covering 0.83m² per roll (not 1m² like trade turf). This means for every square metre of lawn, you need approximately 1.2 B&Q rolls. For a 50m² lawn, you need 60 rolls (50 ÷ 0.83 = 60.2) before wastage. Always check the label on the roll as dimensions can change. Our calculator's "B&Q / DIY Store" preset handles this conversion automatically.
