💡 Spot treatment tip: One 250ml bottle of Weedol concentrate mixed correctly will cover approximately 170m² of lawn — so for spot treatments under 50m², a single bottle will last multiple treatments over the season. Store unused concentrate in a cool, dry place away from frost.

UK Lawn Weedkiller — When to Apply

Timing is as important as product selection for effective UK broadleaf weed control. Treating at the wrong time of year significantly reduces efficacy.

❄️ December – February — Do Not Treat
Winter: Weeds Dormant — Treatment Ineffective
Selective lawn weedkillers work by being absorbed through the leaves of actively growing broadleaf weeds. During winter dormancy, weed growth slows to near zero and the plants have minimal leaf surface for absorption. Applying selective weedkiller in winter wastes product entirely — the active ingredients (MCPA, Fluroxypyr, Clopyralid, Mecoprop-P) require active cell division to be effective. Additionally, frost on leaf surfaces prevents absorption. Use the winter months instead to plan your treatment programme, soil test for pH, and source the correct product for your specific weed types identified in the previous season.
Do NOT treat Dec–Feb Plan treatment programme instead Soil test for pH in January
🌱 March – April — Early Spring Treatment Window
Spring: First Treatment of the Year
As soil temperature rises above 8°C and weeds begin actively growing, the first spring weedkiller application becomes effective. March and April offer a good treatment window — weeds are young, growing strongly and have sufficient leaf area to absorb systemic herbicide effectively. However, UK spring weather can be unpredictable — avoid applying when frost is forecast within 24 hours and wait for a dry spell of at least 24 hours after application. Early spring treatment is particularly effective against daisy, dandelion, plantain and creeping buttercup before they become established. After spring treatment, allow 3–4 weeks before overseeding any affected bare patches.
Best for: daisy, dandelion, plantain Soil temp above 8°C required Avoid if frost forecast
🌿 May – June — Prime Treatment Window
Late Spring: Best Time to Treat Most UK Lawn Weeds
May and June represent the prime weedkiller application window for most UK lawns. Temperatures are consistently warm (10–20°C), weeds are in active vigorous growth with large leaf surface area, and both the weeds and the lawn grass are growing strongly. The grass is robust enough to recover quickly after treatment. Apply in early morning or evening to avoid treatment in full midday sun which can cause product evaporation and increase risk of grass scorch. Clover and speedwell — the most difficult UK lawn weeds — are best treated in May when they are actively growing but before they become fully established. A May application is the single most effective weedkiller treatment of the year for most UK lawns.
Best overall window — all weed types Apply morning or evening Apply at 10–20°C for best results
☀️ July – August — Summer Caution Period
Summer Drought: Reduce Rate or Avoid Treating
Selective weedkillers can be applied in summer but require more caution in the UK. During periods of drought stress, grass and weeds both reduce transpiration — reducing the absorption rate of foliar-applied herbicides. Additionally, applying selective weedkiller to heat-stressed grass (below 20mm mowing height, yellowing in drought) risks scorching the weakened turf. If treating in summer, reduce the application rate by 10–20%, apply in the early morning or evening when temperatures are below 22°C, and ensure the lawn has been watered 24–48 hours before treatment. Never apply to drought-stressed, wilting or dormant grass. If a summer drought is ongoing, wait for autumn for best results.
Reduce rate 10–20% in drought Apply early morning only in summer Never apply to heat-stressed grass
🍂 September – October — Second Prime Window
Autumn: Second Best Time — Ideal for Stubborn Weeds
September and October provide the second-best weedkiller treatment window of the UK year. Weeds are still actively growing and drawing energy downward into their root systems in preparation for winter — this makes systemic weedkillers particularly effective as the active ingredients are transported directly to the roots, reducing the chance of regrowth the following season. Autumn treatment is especially effective for deep-rooted weeds such as thistle, nettle, creeping buttercup and yarrow. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before the first forecast frost. After autumn weedkiller treatment, wait 3–4 weeks before overseeding any gaps — soil temperature must remain above 8°C for successful grass seed germination.
Best for: thistle, nettle, buttercup Systemic effect reaches roots Apply 4–6 weeks before first frost
🍃 November — Closing Window / Stop Treatment
Late Autumn: Treat Early November Only if Mild
Early November can still be effective for weedkiller application in mild UK autumns (particularly in the south of England and Wales) if soil temperatures remain above 8°C and weeds are still showing active green growth. However, by mid-November in most UK regions, effectiveness drops sharply and there is an increasing risk of the product sitting on leaf surfaces through overnight frost rather than being absorbed. November treatment is not recommended for Scotland or northern England. If treating in early November, use a systemic product (MCPA/Fluroxypyr based) at the full recommended rate and monitor the 7-day weather forecast for frost-free conditions.
Early November: mild south UK only Mid November onwards: do not treat Scotland/N.England: stop in October

UK Lawn Weeds — Identification & Treatment Difficulty

The most common UK lawn broadleaf weeds — how to identify them and which selective herbicide active ingredient is most effective for each type.

🌼

Common Daisy (Bellis perennis)

Flat rosette of small spoon-shaped leaves with white flowers. Thrives in closely mown, compacted lawns. One of the most common UK lawn weeds and one of the easiest to control with any selective product.

Easy to control Any selective weedkiller 1–2 treatments
🌻

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Distinctive toothed leaves in a ground-level rosette. Deep taproot — regrows if not treated systemically. Responds well to MCPA or Mecoprop-P based products. Young plants treated in spring are easiest to eliminate.

Moderate — responds to treatment MCPA, Mecoprop-P effective 1–3 treatments
🍀

White Clover (Trifolium repens)

Trefoil leaflets, spreading stolons, nitrogen-fixing. Very common in UK lawns and moderately difficult to eliminate — waxy leaf surface reduces herbicide absorption. Requires MCPA or Fluroxypyr-based product applied in May for best results.

Moderate-difficult MCPA, Fluroxypyr needed 2–3 repeat treatments
💜

Slender Speedwell (Veronica filiformis)

Tiny round leaves with pale blue/lilac flowers. Spreads rapidly by vegetative fragmentation — each tiny stem segment can regrow. The hardest common UK lawn weed to eliminate. Requires Fluroxypyr + Clopyralid (e.g. Weedol) and multiple seasonal treatments over 2–3 years.

Very difficult Fluroxypyr + Clopyralid required Multiple years of treatment
🌾

Creeping Buttercup (Ranunculus repens)

Three-lobed glossy leaves with bright yellow flowers. Spreads by stolons across moist, poorly drained lawns. Moderate to difficult — requires Fluroxypyr-containing products. Often returns if drainage issues are not addressed. Two treatments per year in spring and autumn is the most effective programme.

Moderate-difficult Fluroxypyr essential Improve drainage to prevent return
🌿

Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)

Narrow ribbed lance-shaped leaves in a ground rosette. Tolerates close mowing and compaction. Responds well to MCPA and Mecoprop-P based products. Easily controlled with a standard spring treatment. Dense tap root — ensure systemic product is used for full eradication.

Easy–moderate MCPA, Mecoprop-P effective 1–2 treatments
🟡

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Feathery finely divided leaves with white flower clusters. Very drought-tolerant — often remains green during dry UK summers when grass browns. Moderately difficult — requires Mecoprop-P or Dicamba-containing product. Best treated in May–June when actively growing.

Moderate Mecoprop-P, Dicamba effective 2 treatments per season
🌵

Thistle (Cirsium / Carduus spp.)

Spiny lobed leaves and purple flowers. Deep taproot. Typically enters lawns from adjacent rough ground or borders. Best treated in autumn when the plant is translocating energy to roots — this ensures the systemic herbicide reaches deep into the rootstock. SBK Brushwood Killer or high-strength Dicamba products are most effective.

Difficult SBK Brushwood Killer best Autumn treatment most effective
🌸

Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris)

Dark oval leaves in a spreading mat with purple-blue flower spikes. Very common in finer UK ornamental lawns. Tolerates close mowing well and spreads rapidly in moist conditions. Requires Fluroxypyr-containing product (Weedol/Resolva 3-way formula) applied in May for best efficacy.

Moderate Fluroxypyr 3-way formula Spring + autumn treatment
