A 3-step approach to make sure you buy exactly the right amount — not too little, not too much.
For rectangular lawns, multiply length × width in metres. For irregular shapes, divide the area into smaller rectangles, calculate each, then add them together. For circles, use π × radius². Always add 5–10% for wastage on edges.
New lawns need more seed than overseeding — typically double the rate. A standard UK new lawn uses 35–50g/m² for ryegrass or fescue mixes. Pure bent grass is much lower at 8–10g/m² due to its microscopic seed size.
Multiply your area (m²) by the sowing rate (g/m²) to get the total in grams, then divide by 1,000 for kilograms. Round up to the nearest bag size. It is always better to buy slightly more seed than you need.
Common mistakes when buying and sowing grass seed — and how to avoid them.
More seed does not mean better results. Sowing at more than 50g/m² creates overcrowded seedlings that compete for water and nutrients. The seedlings thin themselves, wasting seed and money. Stick to the recommended rate.
UK grass seed needs a minimum soil temperature of 8–10°C to germinate. The best sowing windows are April–May (spring) or August–September (early autumn). Autumn sowings benefit from warm soil and reliable rainfall.
Divide your total seed into two equal halves. Sow the first half walking North to South across your lawn, then sow the second half walking East to West. This cross-hatch method prevents uneven stripes and bare patches.
Cheap grass seed often has low germination rates or high weed seed contamination. Look for DEFRA-certified seed from UK registered suppliers and check the purity and germination percentage on the bag label — aim for 90%+ germination.
Always purchase at least 10% more seed than your calculation requires. Edges, awkward corners, and uneven distribution always use more seed than the theoretical calculation suggests. It is cheaper to buy extra upfront than reorder later.
After sowing, lightly rake seed into the top 5–10mm of soil. Water with a fine mist (never a powerful jet) to avoid washing seed away. Keep the seedbed consistently moist for the first 14–21 days until germination is complete.
