How to Measure Your UK Garden or Lawn
Step-by-Step Guide
1
Measure the length — place a tape measure along the longest straight side of your lawn. Record in metres.
2
Measure the width — measure at right angles (90°) to the length. If the width varies, measure at the widest point and the narrowest, then average them.
3
Multiply length × width — the result is your area in square metres (m²).
4
L-shaped or irregular lawns — split the shape into rectangles, calculate each area separately, then add them together.
5
Add 10–15% wastage — always add 10–15% extra when ordering turf or seed to account for edges, cuts and uneven coverage.
Digital Measuring Tips
Google Maps / Satellite View — right-click on your garden boundary and use "Measure distance" to get approximate dimensions. Accurate enough for seed and fertiliser quantities.
Smart Tape Measure Apps — iOS Measure app and Android equivalents use your phone camera to estimate distances. Useful for awkward shapes but less precise than a physical tape.
Step counting — one adult pace ≈ 0.75–0.8m. Count paces along and across your lawn, multiply by 0.75 for a quick rough estimate. Always verify with a tape for purchasing decisions.
Garden planning apps — apps like Planta, GardenTags or RHS Garden Planner allow you to draw your garden shape digitally and calculate area automatically.
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the length (in metres) by the width (in metres). For example, a lawn that is 10 metres long and 8 metres wide has an area of 10 × 8 = 80 square metres (m²). Square metres measure area (a two-dimensional surface) while metres measure length (one dimension) — so you always need two measurements to calculate area.
The average UK back garden is approximately 80–100 m² — roughly 10m × 8m to 12m × 8m. Terraced houses typically have 20–50 m² back gardens, semi-detached houses average 80–120 m², and detached houses range from 120–300 m². Urban London gardens are typically 30–60 m²; rural properties can exceed 500 m² (0.05 hectares).
For overseeding an existing lawn: use 35g of grass seed per m². For a completely new lawn on bare soil: use 50g per m². Always add 10–15% to your calculation as a wastage allowance for edges and uneven distribution. So for an 80 m² lawn, you need 80 × 35g = 2,800g (2.8kg) for overseeding, or 80 × 50g = 4,000g (4.0kg) for a new lawn.
You need 1 m² of turf for every 1 m² of lawn, but always add 5–10% for wastage (cuts, edges and any damage during laying). Standard UK turf rolls are typically 1m × 0.5m = 0.5m² per roll, so divide your area by 0.5 to get the number of rolls needed. For an 80 m² lawn: 80 ÷ 0.5 = 160 rolls, plus 10% = 176 rolls total.
Split your L-shape into two rectangles. Measure each rectangle separately (length × width), then add the two areas together. For example: if Rectangle A is 8m × 6m = 48 m² and Rectangle B is 5m × 4m = 20 m², the total L-shape area is 48 + 20 = 68 m². Alternatively, calculate the full rectangle that would contain the L-shape, then subtract the missing corner piece.
1 hectare (ha) = 10,000 m². To convert m² to hectares, divide by 10,000. To convert hectares to m², multiply by 10,000. Common conversions: 500 m² = 0.05 ha; 1,000 m² = 0.1 ha; 2,500 m² = 0.25 ha (a quarter of a hectare); 5,000 m² = 0.5 ha. For UK gardeners, most domestic gardens range from 0.003 ha (30 m²) to 0.05 ha (500 m²).
To convert square metres to square feet, multiply by 10.764. For example, 80 m² × 10.764 = 861.1 square feet. To convert square feet back to square metres, divide by 10.764 (or multiply by 0.0929). Common conversions: 10 m² = 107.6 sq ft; 50 m² = 538.2 sq ft; 100 m² = 1,076.4 sq ft; 200 m² = 2,152.8 sq ft.
